Volleyball and Cross Country are being led by new Head Coaches

Updated on 04/15/2024

The Knights have found a Head Volleyball Coach who has restored energy in the program. Head Coach Alysia Baznik has been a Special Education Teacher at Loy Norrix for 4 years and is now the Department Chair. She is from Naperville, Illinois wear she attended and played at Naperville Central High School. She received a Scholarship to play at Western Michigan University. She played many position, was a team captain, as well as a MAC Champion which allowed the Broncos to play in the NCAA Tournament.

The Varsity Volleyball team has had the best start in the last 20+ years. They went 3-0 in the Loy Norrix Quad defeating Benton Harbor, Cassopolis, and Berrien Springs. They were 4-1-1 at the Coloma Invitational while placing 2nd and they went 4-0-1 while winning the Delton Kellogg Invitational. There has been great coaching as well as great leadership by the athletes which has pushed them to their 11-1-2  record. The Competition heats up today (8/31) at the East Kentwood Quad where the Knights will see Portage Northern, East Kentwood, GR Forest Hills Eastern, and Grandville.

The JV team is 13-4-2 under new coach Jessica Goldsmith and the Freshman are learning the ropes of High School Competition under LN alum and former player Elexis Buchanan.

All 3 teams will host Stevensville Lakeshore for a tough match up on Wednesday 9/7.

After 45 years connected to Loy Norrix through being a Student-Athlete and a Coach, Greg Savicke decided to retire after his long tenure. Coach Savicke had continuous energy and love for Cross Country as well as Track and Field. His dedication to Loy Norrix High School was tremendous and will be missed.

A very familiar face steps in as the new Head Coach. Brad Schmidt has been the Cross Country Assistant Coach for the past 9 years as he now steps into the head role. Coach Schmidt teaches Math at Loy Norrix. He is an avid runner himself who competed in the Boston Marathon this past April. We look forward to Coach Schmidt and his ability to get the most out of his athletes.

The teams have competed twice thus far in the season. In the Portage Central Early Bird Invitational, the Women's Team was 9th and the Men's team was 10th. In the Laingsburg Invitational this past Friday the Women's Team finished 3rd and the Men's Team finished 4th.

Top finishers for each team in both races were Ana Dunfee for the Women's team who finished 9th in 21:07 at the PC meet and she ran 19:52 for 2nd at Laingsburg. Freshman Jackson Lam led the Men;s team finishing 33rd at PC with a 17:40. He was 8th at Laingsburg finishing in 17:53.

The teams will next compete at the Holland West Ottawa Invitational on Saturday 9/10.
