Women's Tennis comeback heads a solid Tuesday
Updated on 06/10/2022
Spring Sports were in full bloom on Tuesday as the weather cooperated and a lot of teams saw action.
The Women's Tennis Team is small in numbers with 8 players but big on heart. With the small number of athletes, the team has to give up 2 of the 8 total points before the match even begins. They hosted Niles on Tuesday and with the 2-0 deficit to start out, they needed 4 out of 6 wins in the remaining to earn a tie.
The deficit was 4-0 as Niles won the 2 doubles matches. As the fours singles matches were in play, the results starting to turn in the favor of the Knights. Sophomore Anna Buck picked up a 6-0, 6-4 win at #1 Singles and Sophomore Abigail Augustine was a 6-3, 6-2 winner at #2 Singles to pull the squad within 4-2 with two matches remaining on court.
At #3 Singles, Senior Zoe Srackangast pulled off a 2-6, 6-4, 6-2 win and the score was 4-3 with one match left. In that final match, it was Sophomore Carson Williams with her teammates supporting her rallying against daylight time and winning 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 to end the team match in a 4-4 tie.
It was a great effort by the team. They will see action again on Saturday in the Greater Kalamazoo Invitational.
Yesterday was the season opener for the Baseball team and they played well in taking down Climax Scotts 14-2 in five innings. Timely hitting by Yoahness Ademodi, Drew Roberts, Baker Conley, and Grant Emenheiser were key in the win. The team will take thier 1-0 record on the road to face #9 Portage Northern in a DH on Thursday before heading to Cornerstone University on Saturday for a DH with Zeeland West.
The Softball team also opened their season by splitting a pair of games with Bloomingdale. The Knights dropped the opener 10-3 but rebounded for a 10-1 win in Game 2. The 1-1 Softballers will head to PN on Thursday to take on the Huskies. The Knights will host Mendon on Friday. Look for a more detailed report from Coach Johnson on the website.
The Track Teams were in action at Portage Northern facing the Huskies and St. Joe. There was some scoring difficulties that are still being figured out by PN but on paper it appears the Women's Team swept both matchups while the Men's Team went 1-1 but that will be official shortly.
In the Women's Meet, Joy Hart led the way winning the 800, 1600, and 3200 meter runs. Also taking first places were the 800 Relay team of Kendal Sloan, Breonia Robinson, Jasmine Reid and Ebony Battle. In addition, the 1600 Relay team of Kendal Sloan, Emily Holtz, Madisyn Caldwell, and Ebony Battle took first place.
In the Men's Meet, Nathaniel White and Stephan Spiekes won 3 events and Joe Meyers, Marshawn Bell, and Darell Mabon II all won 2 events. Vernon Reaves and Kenny Walker also picked up first place finishes.
